The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed the top ten best-selling cars in the UK for 2019. The Ford Fiesta is still in top spot as the most popular car in the country with over 70,000 registrations, followed by its rival, the Volkswagen Golf.
Overall, new car sales were down by 2.74% in 2019, with annual registrations falling to 2,162,143 units. The biggest decline was seen in diesel car sales with a 22% decrease in sales since 2018. Petrol car sales increased by 2.2% and interestingly, battery electric vehicles saw a significant 135.6% increase.
Despite the increasing demand for SUVs and crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and Ford Kuga, the top 10 best-selling cars for 2019 is dominated by conventional hatchbacks such as the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf and MINI.
