Saving money at the pump with loyalty rewards.

A couple of people food shopping

This post was originally written 31 May 2022 has been updated 29th January 2024

With the cost of living crisis and fuel prices constantly fluctuating  it makes sense to take advantage of your loyalty reward schemes where you can. You may already be using your cards and have gathered a considerable amount of points that can help you get money off your fuel or shopping expenses. Either way, these savings will soon build up quickly once you are using your card regularly.

Now is a great time to maximise your loyalty rewards and save money on fuel. One of the reward cards in your purse/wallet could be used at your local fuel station as well as your local supermarket.

Both UK petrol stations and supermarkets have teamed up to bring you rewards, and some offer points which result in money off at fuel stations. Hopefully, Warrantywise will be able to fuel your savings, depending on what type of card you have.

Tesco Clubcard

Tesco provides rewards in the form of vouchers when you spend money at their fuel stations. Here’s how you’ll benefit from using their reward scheme.

The card you’ll need: Tesco Clubcard

The reward scheme: You’ll get 1 point for every £3 you spend on fuel at a Tesco fuel station.

The reward you’ll receive: Your points turn into vouchers to help you save on your weekly groceries, fun days out and much more. 150 points will get you a £1.50 voucher.

Sainsbury’s Nectar Card

The Sainsbury’s Nectar Card is great as you can use it at Sainsbury’s petrol stations, supermarkets as well as Esso fuel garages. The reward scheme works differently when using it at Esso but we’ll go through how you can use it at Sainsbury’s petrol stations first.

The card you’ll need: Nectar Card

The reward scheme: You’ll get 1 point for every 1 litre of fuel when you fill up at Sainsbury’s petrol stations.

The reward you’ll receive: 500 points are worth £2.50 at Sainsbury’s. You can spend your points in-store or online.

Esso Nectar gives you points when you fill up at participating Esso service stations. You can collect and spend Nectar points at participating Esso service stations. You can either swap the points you collect to get 5p per litre off fuel at Esso  service stations, or you can spend them at other Nectar partners.

How you can claim: Have your Nectar card, key tag or our handy app at the ready the next time you pop into an Esso station to fill up on fuel or snacks for the road.

Morrisons More

Morrisons used to offer fuel rewards as part of their old scheme, however, they changed their offering back in March 2021 which resulted in fuel rewards no longer being available. They do, however, offer one-off spot discounts, such as their most recent one in February 2022, which gave customers 7p per litre of fuel when they spent over £40 in store. If you have a MorrisonsMore , it’s worth keeping an eye on when these offers are available.

Asda Rewards

Despite having hundreds of petrol stations in the UK, Asda Rewards does not currently offer a dedicated loyalty scheme which offers rewards for fuel purchases. The chain is said to be trialling a pilot scheme currently.

Credit Cards

Using your credit card can also be an effective method for getting cashback, enhancing your Nectar or Clubcard points, and achieving additional savings on fuel. However, it’s important to be aware of any potential fees before applying for any credit card as they may outweigh any potential savings.

Sainsbury’s Credit Card

Sainsbury’s offers various credit cards, such as the 28-month 0% balance transfer card. All their credit cards provide two Nectar points for every £1 spent on fuel and one point for every £5 used in other purchases.

Tesco Credit Card

Using a Tesco credit card, like the Tesco Bank Purchases credit card, allows you to gain one Clubcard point for every £4 spent on fuel at Tesco, plus a point for every litre purchased. Additionally, for every £8 spent on other items, you can collect one Clubcard point.

Asda Credit Card

Asda also launched a new Asda Money credit card in conjunction with Asda Rewards, where customers can earn money back into their Cashpot every time they spend. Customers will receive 1% back on all Asda purchases, including fuel, optical and other services, along with 0.3% back on spend outside Asda.

NatWest/RBS Reward Credit Card

Acquiring a NatWest/RBS Reward Credit Card offers you 0.25% cashback at supermarket petrol stations and 1% on supermarket spending. This card includes a £24 annual fee, which is waived if you have a Reward current account.

Branded Fuel Schemes

By joining a fuel loyalty scheme, you’re not just purchasing fuel; you’re also accumulating points or earning rewards that can translate into significant savings over time. These programs often extend beyond fuel discounts, providing offers on in-store purchases, car washes, and even partnering with external brands for broader rewards.

  • Redeem points for vouchers once you reach 500 points.
  • Points have a higher value compared to some other programs.
